Most traditional welding schools train on one or two machine brands — usually Miller or Lincoln — and only on a handful of specific models. Graduates walk out knowing how to run those machines, then hit a shop with a different brand or a different model and have no idea where to start. Worse, most schools never teach setup in the first place — actually wiring the machine, connecting the power source to the feeder, the groundwork you need before you ever strike an arc. Honestly, a lot of what gets covered in a class like that, you could learn alone in your garage with a YouTube video. The actual value of in-person training is the instructor relationship, and that’s exactly what gets rationed.
None of this means the welder is the problem when bad habits show up. “Practice makes perfect” isn’t quite right — perfect practice makes perfect. Practice just builds muscle memory, and whether that muscle memory helps or hurts depends entirely on what was being practiced in the first place. If a guy’s fighting bad habits, it’s not because he’s a bad welder. It’s because he built strong muscle memory around the wrong thing, probably because nobody ever corrected it along the way. That’s a training gap, not a character flaw — and it’s fixable.

For a shop owner, time is money. You can send your guys to a six-month vocational program so they come out with a certificate — one that also qualifies them to go work for your competition — or you can show them, in a few days, exactly what they need to move repairs out the door with less or no rework, better productivity, and a stronger reputation. As of 2026, I’m not aware of any traditional welding school that specifically teaches repair welding. Even in production-focused programs, pulse MIG is rarely covered, and I haven’t found one that teaches laser welding at all. Those are the technologies shaping where this trade is headed, and a lot of schools — and shops — are still trying to solve tomorrow’s problems with yesterday’s tools.
Most local welding supply stores are gas distributors first. They carry machines because corporate requires it, not because there’s real margin in it, and welding wire and filler metal — what the industry calls “hard goods” — rank even lower on the priority list. Staff get trained on gas, because that’s where the profit is. Ask them a real question about a machine or a consumable, and there’s a good chance you know more than they do. Online-only sellers — machines and hard goods, no gas — aren’t necessarily better. Many are reachable by email only, occasionally by phone, and once the sale is done, typically you’re on your own.
That gap shows up the moment something goes wrong. With most sellers, the conversation ends right after the sale.
